How to Get a NIF in Portugal (You Can't Rent Without One)

Ask anyone who has moved to Portugal what the first real hurdle is, and most say the same three letters: NIF. You need it before you can sign a lease, open a bank account, or turn on the electricity — which often means needing it before you've even found a flat. Here's how to get one without it stalling your whole move.

What the NIF actually is

NIF stands for Número de Identificação Fiscal — your Portuguese tax number, issued by the tax authority (Autoridade Tributária, universally called Finanças). Every adult who signs a contract in Portugal needs one, resident or not. It's the single identifier that ties you to a lease, a utility account, a bank account and your taxes.

It is not a residence permit and grants no immigration status — it's purely a tax ID. But almost nothing administrative works without it, which is why it's the first thing to sort out.

Getting one as an EU/EEA citizen

Walk into any Finanças office with your passport or national ID card and a proof of address — your home-country address is fine. It's free, and you often leave the same day with the number in hand. You don't need to be a resident to get one.

Getting one as a non-EU citizen

Non-residents from outside the EU/EEA are generally required to appoint a fiscal representative — a person or company resident in Portugal who agrees to receive tax correspondence on your behalf. Law firms and specialised services provide this for a fee. Once you become resident, the representative requirement usually falls away. Bring your passport and a proof of address from your home country.

Doing it remotely, before you arrive

You don't have to be in Portugal. A lawyer or a specialised NIF service can obtain the number for you with a power of attorney and copies of your passport and proof of address, usually within a few business days to a couple of weeks.

Getting your NIF early is one of the highest-leverage things you can do before a move, precisely because so much else — the lease, the bank account, the utilities — is blocked until it exists.
